The reason I post Stephen King quotes is because I think he’s a massively underrated writer who deserves a lot more critical recognition. His early work is just as powerful and chilling as many novels by more canonical authors such as Cormac McCarthy and Richard Yates, and stylistically, his writing is far more sophisticated than celebrated authors like Melville and Orwell for example. The modern horror genre is widely considered to be trashy literature due to its mainstream popularity, but there is a growing critical reception which is beginning to recognise its worth which I fully support. ‘Respectable’ genres such as the sensation novel and detective fiction were also considered vulgar in their time, again due to popularity, and both are now studied in universities worldwide and receive a great deal of critical attention. I see a gaping flaw in the valuation of historical horror writers, such as Henry James and Bram Stoker, and the discrediting of modern novelists like King. I will concede that Stephen King has somewhat sold out in recent years and his novels have lost a lot of the brilliance which the early work had, but I don’t think he is any way, shape or form even comparable to a children’s writer like J.K Rowling.
